  1. Grease a pie pan and place plums cut side down in it
  2. Heat water and sugar over medium heat without stirring til caramel and immediately pour over the plums
  3. Preheat oven to 350°F
  4. Cream butter and sugar. Then add eggs one at a time.
  5. Mix in sour cream, lemon zest, and vanilla
  6. In another bowl mix dry ingredients and then add to butter mixture. Mix until just incorporated
  7. Pour over plums and spread evenly. Bake for 30 to 40 min.
  8. Let cool for 15 min and invert onto a plate

BUT Zwetschgen aren't ordinary plums, a Datschi isn't really a Kuchen, and a Kuchen is most definitely not a cake! Or at least not a tall, spongy cake – it's flatter. Combine cinnamon and remaining sugar; sprinkle over plums. For topping, in a small bowl, combine flour and sugar; cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
